This airbag system inspection guide explains what a proper Supplemental Restraint System, or SRS, inspection involves, when it is needed, and why clearing a warning light is never the same as confirming the system is safe.
Airbags, seat belts, impact sensors, wiring, and the SRS control module work as one coordinated safety system. If one part has been damaged, disconnected, replaced incorrectly, or programmed improperly, the vehicle may not respond as engineered in a future crash. When an Airbag Inspection Is Necessary
An illuminated airbag or SRS warning light is the clearest reason to schedule diagnostics. The light generally means the vehicle has identified a fault and may disable part of the restraint system. It should not be ignored, even if the vehicle drives normally and no airbags deployed.
A professional inspection is also appropriate after any collision, including a low-speed impact. The severity of visible bumper or body damage does not reliably show what happened behind the panels. What a Proper Airbag System Inspection Includes
An airbag inspection is not a single scan-tool reading. Certified diagnostics begin with identifying the vehicle correctly, reviewing the collision history when available, and following the manufacturer’s repair information for that specific year, make, model, and trim.
Diagnostic Scan and Fault-Code Review
A technician connects an OEM-capable or professional diagnostic tool to communicate with the SRS control module. The scan identifies active and stored diagnostic trouble codes, which can point to issues with sensors, airbags, pretensioners, clock springs, seat occupancy systems, modules, or circuit resistance.
Codes are not a repair plan by themselves. A code may identify an affected circuit, but the technician still needs to test the circuit and inspect related components. Replacing the part named in a code without confirming the cause can leave the underlying fault in place.
The scan also helps determine whether crash events have been recorded in the restraint control module. On many vehicles, deployment-related data requires manufacturer-approved repair or replacement procedures. Simply erasing codes or installing a used module without proper configuration may not restore factory operation.
Visual Inspection of the Restraint Components
The physical inspection looks for evidence that parts deployed, were damaged, or were previously repaired outside approved procedures. This includes the driver and passenger airbag modules, knee airbags, seat-mounted and curtain airbags, steering wheel, dashboard, seat tracks, seat belt assemblies, buckles, and visible wiring connectors.

Seat Belt Pretensioner and Occupant-System Checks
Seat belts are part of the SRS, not separate from it. During certain crashes, pretensioners tighten the belts in milliseconds to help position occupants before airbag deployment. A belt may retract and latch after a collision yet still have a deployed pretensioner or internal damage that requires replacement.
Many vehicles also use passenger-seat occupancy sensors to determine whether and how the passenger airbag should deploy. Seat replacement, upholstery work, liquid damage, or incorrect parts can affect these systems. Some models require a zero-point calibration or occupant classification procedure after approved repairs. This is one reason a general warning-light reset is not sufficient.
Wiring, Sensor, and Module Verification
SRS wiring and connectors are engineered for a safety-critical circuit. Technicians inspect for corrosion, stretched terminals, damaged insulation, poor prior repairs, and improper connector locks. They verify sensor locations and mounting integrity, especially after collision damage to bumper reinforcements, frame rails, door structures, or center-console areas.
Testing must be performed carefully and according to manufacturer procedures. Airbag circuits contain pyrotechnic devices. Improvised probing, resistance testing on the wrong circuit, or disconnecting components without the correct power-down procedure can create danger or damage parts. This is not a system for trial-and-error repairs in a driveway.
Why Post-Collision Teardown Matters
A proper collision repair begins with more than what can be seen from the outside. Structural teardown may reveal damage behind a bumper cover, inside a door, beneath a seat, or around a dashboard support. Those hidden conditions can affect the SRS directly or alter how crash forces are managed through the vehicle.
For example, replacing a bumper cover after a parking-lot impact may be straightforward if no underlying components are damaged. But if the impact bent a reinforcement, shifted a sensor mount, or damaged wiring, the repair scope changes. The correct approach depends on the vehicle design, impact location, fault codes, and OEM procedures.
This is also where insurance coordination matters. An estimate based only on visible damage may need to be updated after teardown and diagnostics. Clear documentation helps ensure necessary safety repairs are identified and submitted rather than overlooked to keep an initial estimate low.
Red Flags to Watch for After Repairs
Drivers should expect the SRS warning light to illuminate briefly during startup and then turn off. If it stays on, flashes, or returns after a repair, schedule a diagnostic inspection promptly. Do not accept “it just needs to reset” as a complete answer without documented testing.
Be cautious if a recently purchased vehicle has mismatched interior panels, loose steering-wheel trim, unusual seat belt behavior, warning lights that do not illuminate at startup, or signs that dashboard material has been repaired. These conditions do not prove airbag work was done improperly, but they justify a professional evaluation.

Airbag repair is an area where parts choices, procedures, and programming matter. Some components may be replaced, while others may require inspection, calibration, or module programming. The correct path is vehicle-specific.
A lower upfront repair price can be tempting after an accident, particularly when the damage seems minor. The trade-off is serious: reused, incompatible, improperly installed, or undeclared restraint components can compromise the system’s ability to protect occupants. Safety work should be documented, performed with the appropriate parts and procedures, and verified with a post-repair scan.
